However I regularly refer to "African-Americans" as black guys among my black friends and it is not a problem.

I have met plenty of black dudes that think they are total pimps and they would never admit to having to resort to their hand for some play. I have also met plenty of black guys who aren't like that, I just wanted to add that I agree somewhat with OP.
