Jobs on Cruises?

Anyone know of where to look(web site) where there is jobs posted for cruise lines? Has anyone here been employed by any? Any info would be great.

People get paid reasonably well, but I do know that they work HARD hours while they're on board...definitely not glamorous. That said, I would first check all the major cruise lines' websites.

Having been on about a dozen cruises on different lines, I don't know if "reasonably well" describes the level of pay. Most employees on cruise ships are hired on a contract basis ranging from five months to a year. They hail from Third World / former Soviet-bloc nations and are willing to work for pay that is pretty low by Western standards. They depend on tips from passengers to supplement their wages.

And they do work hard . 12-18 hour days are not uncommon in the life of a cruise ship worker.

I think NCL America might be different, because it is a U.S.-flagged cruise line and has to hire Americans, and pay them at least a U.S.-level minimum wage. But tips are probably still the norm...

I've heard that when the ship docks the Casino is closed. I went on one cruise about 7-8 years ago but didn't play when the boat was docked so i can't say for sure.

If you're a U.S. citizen forget about getting a job on the cruise lines. I'm a U.S. merchant sailor and I work on government chartered vessels that pay pretty well. Almost all cruise lines are owned overseas and they primarily hire 3rd world crews and pay them squat in very poor living conditions (you won't be living like the passengers). If you're really interested in looking into this as a career check out http://www.seafarers.org/. This is the largest union for American merchant seamen and has entry level jobs. If you're really interested you could go to my alma mater and become a merchant marine officer http://www.usmma.edu/. There is one U.S. owned cruise line that is operated by U.S. crews and officers but it's in Hawaii. From what I've heard, they don't pay nearly as well as most of the other industry. As far as working on gaming vessels, that's another story. I worked on a casino boat in Indiana and didn't like it. However, stuff like that is a lot more like a "normal" job as you go home every night. PM me if you want some more info.

SIU's New York headquarters are down the block from me. You don't want to associate with the characters that hang around there looking for placement.

While it's true that many of them are dubious characters, they are well paid for the most part and it's pretty much the only unlicensed union going anymore. They've engulfed most of the other ones. So if you want to get in the game and don't want to go to 4 years of school to be an officer, that's your best bet.

This is correct. Shipboard casinos are only open when the ship is in international waters. They are not licensed to operate anywhere else.
