How to play against a flush draw? What should I have done ?

Take a look at this hand, and I would appreciate comments on how I should of played it. Unless what I did was correct and the guy made a bad call. Although he did have quite a few outs.

72 people left, pays top 50. Table was very tight.

It was a terrible bet by you (8765 into a pot of 1900, why???) and a terrible call by him given you could easily have had Ax of diamonds and he would have been drawing to 6 outs. You should have bet the pot on the flop with top 2 pair and a draw heavy board but going all in is asking to be called by a set with you drawing almost dead.

I should of stuck in a pot sized one, then built the pot up after the turn and river if the last diamond didn't appear.

Definitely an overbet on the flop. Make around a pot-size bet. I often bet less here for a couple of reasons. One, even a 1/2 pot size bet means if he calls on a flush draw he's making a mistake. Two, I would often make a probing bet here with much less than two pair (if anything at all) and you often need to make the same size bet with a made hand as you do with a bluff or semi-bluff to keep your opponents off balance. If raised on the flop, go ahead and re-raise - you'll probably get your chips in the middle. If a diamond hits the turn, I'd again make a bet of around 1/2 the pot. If you check, he'll bet you off even if he doesn't have a flush. If you bet and he raises then you can start to consider that you're behind although that's not always the case.

He was drawing to an open ended straight as well as a flush...even money call for him if he gets to see the next two cards. Your allin bet gave him the opportunity and the odds, and it makes you look like you don't want to be called.
I believe it would be better here to bet 1/2 to 2/3 of the pot on the flop, same on the turn, check the river if a scare card comes.
he's not laying down his hand here no matter what, but at least you have a chance to get away from your hand, or loose less than your whole stack.

Not sure what the point of this statement is. The OP wants it to look like he doesn't want to be called because in fact he would love to be called by many hands his opponents might be holding. If his opponent had Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (i.e. top pair) rather than J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], and the opponent thinks "oh, the all-in means he doesn't want to be called, he must have a flush draw so my QJ is good right now and I will call the all-in", then that would be a great result.

It's top freaking two. With these stack sizes, our concern should be how best to get our opponents to put their money in the pot. Not how we could get away from our hand or lose the minimum when we are beat.
