Default rooting against cleveland/atheletics

i'm currently in a bet with my friend that involves chris carpenter vs. johan santana post-asb in three categories, wins, ERA, and WHIP. the bet involves a friend, who is a yankee fan, that is MASSIVELY in love with santana, and since carpenter was doing better throughout the year, i challenged him to this bet. it'd be great, imo, to utterly prove him wrong.

recently, carpenter pulled ahead massively in the win column, and has passed santana in ERA and WHIP because of the game against cleveland a couple days ago.

now, the indians are in a wild card race against the yankees, and a different friend of mine thinks that i should be actively rooting for santana to do well. i believe that the yankees should focus on winning the division, and not have to worry about the indians. if the nyy lose the division to the indians because of that one game, i stated that i believe that they simply did not deserve to make the playoffs. whatever happens by rooting for or whatever is irrelevant, it's out of our hands.

question is, as a nyy fan, should i be rooting for santana to do well so that nyy have a better shot at winning the wc? or am i justified in being somewhat satisfied that santana had a mediocre start?

Since it doesn't matter what you root for, do whatever makes you happiest.
