Who are the Rich?
In the "Unions are Evil" thread, Whiskeytown stated that only a rich person could be anti-union. It always bothers me when the left assumes that anyone who agrees with many (or most) of the conservative "issues" must be rich. I have some libertarian leanings, but I definitely tilt to the conservative side. I have never considered myself or my family to be rich (when I was growing up, my sister and I qualified for the reduced price lunches at school), yet I am a conservative.
So, at what household income would you define as "rich"? I am married and have 3 children, and live in a city of about 30K in Middle TN. |

Probably about 250,000 in most places and mid 300,000 in big cities.

Re: Who are the Rich?
Rich is relative. To a poor person, somebody with $100 in their pocket is rich.
Conversly, somebody making a quarter mil a year could have their finances so [censored] up they could be considered poor. Rich would be having enough wealth (plus some) so that you never had to work another day in your life and were able to maintain whatever standard of living you are comfortable with. |

Re: Who are the Rich?
In the US we tend to live at or above our current income level, and the tax code promotes that behavior. Most people I know who make 100-150k are not rich, they're in debt. I never felt rich unless I had disposable income that I didn't "need" to support my current lifestyle -- which raises the threshold substantially, because the goal posts keep moving. If you can stay grounded in your lifestyle and move from 30k to 75k, you will "feel" rich. Using a yardstick with a worldview, everyone in the US is "rich". But that's not the yardstick we use.

Re: Who are the Rich?
My comment about 100k putting you in the top 2% was merely for income. Wealth and "richness" aren't just based on income. There's inherited wealth, property, stocks, bonds, and other assests that make a person rich. If I make 100k a year and spend 98k of it, I wouldn't be anywhere near rich and I don't even think I'd be upper middle class. I'd be damn near broke.
