health and disability insurance

Hi,

How do self employed people get health and disaibility insurance ? I hear that there is an association of self-empoyed people through which you can get cheaper deals.
Any ballpark figures for healthy non-smoking 28yr olds ? Spouse and youngling dependants coverage fee as well ?

At the moment my school wants $300/month for health insurance.
Its not such a cgood plan and seems quite expensive. Comments would be appreciated.
