Default does the \'fake slowplay\' ever work?

6-max. early in session, haven't played before with this particular opponent. He seemed reasonable with what little I saw of his play. Everyone folds to the SB who completes, I check in the BB with 22.

Flop Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].

He bets, I call with the intention of raising any turn card.

Turn 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. He bets, I raise, he calls.

What do you put him on and what's your plan for the river?

I think in that situation you are not getting him to fold a hand that you beat.

Isn't preflop a raise as well? I don't like low PP's but I'm still raising this.

Raise PF.

Not better hand is folding post-flop, so if you want to go to showdown, call down.

Not raising PF sucks and screws me up for this whole hand.

P.S. Raise preflop.

You don't think Villain will lay down a small/mid pair here? Isn't a free showdown play better in case he's drawing here?

I think a turn raise is a little bit better than calling down as I don't see a bluff/semi-bluff 3bet here very often.

I do agree with most in that the pre flop raise would make playing this hand easier.

Also, this is the perfect board for a free showdown play and given your description of opponent, a fold to a 3bet would be quite easy.

Would any of you consider folding if the 9 10or J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] showed up?

The turn's correct, but not because you'll fold any sort of pair / PP (you won't). If he has one card higher than a 6 he will have 12 outs to pass you on the river (an 8 or 6 counterfeights your pair). Give him an excuse to get out of the hand, now.

If he donks the river you fold. Otherwise you check behind.

I'll ammend that I probably raise for a free showdown here too.... I really need to start giving posts the full evaluation they deserve.

So yes, raise, free showdown good, he's not folding a better hand though and you want 2 bets in when he's drawing and will call. Make that the last bet you put in.

why's that?

I don't think I give up much, if anything, by not raising preflop. But I'm not totally sold on that, so I'd like to hear evidence to the contrary.

Also, won't this hand be even more difficult to play if I raise PF? I mean, what if he bets into me? Now, I still don't really know where I am, but I am more inclined to pay off because the pot is bigger. Am I way off on this?

so, he called the raise.

River 7 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].

He checks.

Check behind??

You most likely have the best hand starting with a pair and position on the sb. So raise.
You now have intiative and bet out on the flop. Go from there.

If your not raising 22 in this situation your probably not raising a whole load of other hands you should be.

Easy check behind. Your hand didn't improve and the vast majority of hands that you beat (missed draws) won't call a river bet. He didn't come to the river to fold a better hand for 1 bet, either.
