Bill Buckner - clutch hitter
As many of you know, millions of people have analyzed thousands of years of baseball statistics and come to the conclusion that clutch hitting does not exist.
Well, here's another one of those studies . Except this time the conclusion was different: that clutch hitters almost certainly DO exist. But what I find most interesting is the following: [ QUOTE ] First the clutch performers: Ozzie Smith, Dave Collins, Lloyd Moseby, Tony Gwynn, Ruppert Jones, Rafael Ramirez, Alfredo Griffin, Jorge Orta, Rickey Henderson, and Bill Buckner. Now the chokers: Dave Winfield, Rod Carew, Lance Parrish, Jack Clark, Reggie Jackson, Roy Smalley, Tom Herr, Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, and Julio Franco. (Note that all of these players are good because of selection effects; one has to be a regular for about 7 seasons to pick up 1000 clutch plate appearances.) [/ QUOTE ] That's right, from 1970-1992 Bill Buckner was one of the 10 best clutch hitters. Too bad his clutch fielding was not so hot. |

Re: Bill Buckner - clutch hitter
I read once that Buckner had the best fielding percentage of any first baseman either from 1980-1986 or 1980-1989 (maybe AL, maybe MLB....don't really remember)
But 'clutch' is a whole nuther thing! J |

[ QUOTE ] Sometimes it still hurts. You know how it is. Every day it hurts a little less, and then one day you wake up and the pain is gone. But the funny thing is you learn to miss that pain because, like her, it was a part of your life for so long. -- Swingers [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: Bill Buckner - clutch hitter
I just got done analyzing 10k hands of poker for 5000 players, and I have determined that some people ARE better at hitting flushes than others! Among the best "flushers" are: Manny, Joe, Jim, Jack, George, Kelso. The worst "flushers", suprisingly enough, are Frank, George, Susan, and Willy.
Go figure! |

Re: Bill Buckner - clutch hitter
he raked in that series.
something many people don't know: buckner was usually defensively replaced in the ninth but the manager said that he was one of the biggest reasons they were about to win the world series and that he wanted him on the field when the final out was made. |

Re: Bill Buckner - clutch hitter
Most people don't know that? I thought it was pretty common knowledge at this point.
