$11 Party--AK OOP 1st round

I've recently come off a long hiatus from poker, so I'm a bit rusty. I also don't have too much experience with the SNGs, but seem to be doing well by following the general advice I've seen while lurking here.

That said, I was playing a little while ago and this hand came up. It feels like there should be an obvious play, but I wasn't sure if I got it right.

Any feedback would be appreciated. As it's the first round, I don't have any useful info on the players involved.

cont bet the flop, ~ 100 chips. If you don't take it down, you can check/fold.

Is there a reason to think you're not ahead on the flop?

I would fire one off about 50% on the flop after getting checked to. I'm not sure, but maybe this early, checking for a free shot at the turn might be OK with two other players in the hand.

agreed. When I said check/fold, I meant to any solid bet. Obviously 30 chips isn't.

Yeah, I know the whole hand is weak, but I was so afraid of pissing away chips early in an SNG with just ace-high that I couldn't bring myself to be more aggressive. This certainly didn't work, though, and given what everyone's said here, a CB probably would have been best.

Ah, well, that would be because I'm an idiot. When posting it, I mistakenly thought Button had called instead of BB. I knew I was in position when playing, I swear. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I like a continuation bet of half-pot on the flop. Many don't see the difference between bet sizes, so will just as readily fold to a half-pot bet as to a larger one. The half-pot bet give you 3 to 1 on your bet, which is easily profitable.

Pre-flop I think I would pass. AKo doesn't play in a loose environment. You want good drawing hands, not big cards. When the blinds get bigger, then things change. It depends on the table. If things go the way they did in your situation, that's great. But a lot of times you'll get lots of callers, and AKo can't flop a big enough hand to strongly commit to in level 1 with many callers, unless you hit a miracle straight. If you were in later position, and could be sure of competing against only 1 or 2 others, then I'd be willing to raise as you did. Given you raised (which can't be too bad -- after all, AKo is a fine hand), I like the amount of your raise.

Folding the river was very, very bad (because of the tremendous pot odds you were getting). That was the worst mistake by far of the hand. The rest of your play wasn't bad.
