Stud8 - Day 1, 60 hands - don\'t worry, I\'m not posting all of them
After a false start at Party Poker, I think I've finally settled into a Stud8 home. I've picked the $0.25/$0.50 game at PokerStars. Given that poker is just a recreation for me, you don't need to worry about me spamming the forum with daily updates of my donkiness. I probably will get in a 50-75 hand one-table session every 7-10 days.
I want to chroincle things that I think I've learned and have them reviewed by people who actually know what's going on. I hope this format will be acceptable here and that it helps me get my game up to par a bit faster than it might otherwise. I would like some confirmation that my assessment of things are correct, but I welcome comments on anything. Rather than lump this into one long post, I'm going to post replies to the main thread with different things from the session. If you have ideas for a better presentation, I'll take your suggestions. Stats: 60 hands, 15 (25%) see 4th, 5/8 pots at showdown (all chops), 1 pot won uncontested, net -$6.25

Hardly a steal. I'd raise with jacks here too. #2 I'd usually see fifth here. If you are going to fold for one bet after catching a low straight card, then you shouldn't be calling 3rd. I don't think a fold is too horrible since you can lose a lot of money chasing to hit the second best hand. #3 I don't mind the check here. After calling 6th, there's almost no chance villain is folding the river. At 9,5 BB, you slide just under the next tier of rake. A river bet might be justified if you think villain might not call with just queens on the river, or if you made two pair as well. #4 folding 3rd seems good. 4th is tough because your two small pairs are probably not going to win high and you probably won't hit a low either, leaving you with what may be the best hand now but a hand that is so easily outdrawn that I wouldn't want to play a big pot for. Given this many people in the pot, I think you might flat call 4th for a boat draw. By fifth, you've found yourself in one of the very bad spots I mentioned in hand #2. This is the reason you don't call 3rd. Fold the river of course. #5 Don't raise 4th. Why are you raising? You make people drawing to worse hands to fold when they could have been suckered along, and someone with a better hand isn't folding for anything here. The pot is so small that there's nothing in it to protect with a raise. #6 Don't raise 4th. You may have the best hand, but you might not, and no one is folding so you're just balooning the pot with your one lonely pair, tying yourself to a hand that's easily beaten. #7 you have a pair, 3 to a 6low, 3 to a straight that is almost completely live! He'd have to flip over A234 to get me to fold for one small bet. The size of the pot is another good reason for calling. Heck, even if villain held A234, he'd be glad that you folded the pot to him.

I use a pretty strict set of guidelines for playing small pairs. 1. Two pair and set outs must be live. 2. Must be suited and fairly live. 3. Must be connected and have an ace. 4. Must be drawing to a 6 or better low. Might be too tight, but these hands are really just a draw to a draw.

[/ QUOTE ] I think that this is a very good way for a "newbie" to learn. He gives his reasoning for specific plays, and then makes sure he has the reasoning for the corrections in his play. Thats just thourough. I don't think insults are improving anyone's play
