Hi Ulysses,

I agree with your statements throughout this thread. Yes, Greg played brilliantly, and that's no surprise to those of us who know him. Yes, he also caught some lucky cards when he needed them, and that's no surprise for any WSOP winner, or any big tournament winner for that matter.

I think something curmudgeon said a few days ago pretty much sums up the "deserving" aspect of this: there really isn't all that much difference between the "top tournament pros" (the ones we see on the WPT, etc.), and the best of the "amateur" online players (like Greg). Greg is a great player, and I think Moneymaker has proven himself over the past year as well, placing well in several larger events.

I just don't think you can wade through 2600 entrants, over six days, without being a skilled player. Yes, Greg caught some lucky breaks, but every winner of every tournament has to catch some lucky breaks. Even Doyle Brunson won his two WSOPs by catching runner-runner draws. But no one battles through six days of poker PURELY on lucky breaks.

Greg fully deserves this win, and I couldn't be prouder of him. When I was playing over the past couple of days, and following his progress, and his name would come up in table chat, I said again and again: "Greg taught me most of what little I know about this game." (And lately, I do feel as if I know very little. *sighs*) He's been unfailingly kind and supportive on this forum, pointing out mistakes without rancor, offering sound advice, and treating everyone with courtesy and respect.

I'm thrilled that the rest of the world now knows what we have known for a long time: that Greg Raymer is a superb poker player, and a superb human being as well.

Cris

How big will this thread get? I'm sure I won't be the last to post in it!

Nice to see a Foxwoods regular and 2+2 guy get it done.

Another post, like all the others...

Congratulations Greg! I hope you'll still hang out on 2+2 from time to time, but I suppose you won't have much free time anymore, what with having to count all that money and then spend it.

Delighted for you,

Guy.
