Default edmond fitzgerald

The anniversary of the shipwreck - the 30th - was on Thursday. Just out of curiosity, did anyone else think when they heard the song by (gordon lightfoot?) that it took place like 100 years ago? For some reason, I think of ship wrecks happening on a major ocean in the 1700-1800s and not on LAke Superior in 1975.

I always thought it took place many years earlier too. Not sure why I never clued in that the song was about recent history when it was released.

All my knowledge of shipwreck history comes from Seinfeld...

GEORGE: Hey.

JERRY: Hey. How's the new place?!

GEORGE: Gone. The tenant association made me give it

to this guy because he was an Andrea Doria survivor..

ELAINE: Andrea Doria? Isn't that the one they did the song about?

JERRY: (Correcting her) Edmund Fitzgerald.

ELIANE: I love Edmund Fitzgerald's voice.

JERRY: (Gives Elaine a look) No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship.

GEORGE: (Talking about his would-be apartment) You could fit 15 people in that bathroom..

ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.

JERRY: (Sarcastic) Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens.

Update: I met my friends at some kareoke joint tonight, and I brought the house down with "If you could read my mind" by GL because I said it was in reference to the 30 yr ann. of the EF.

Thanks OP!

That's some crazy [censored]... waves big enough to lift up a huge-ass freighter and snap it in two.

Why wouldn't Gordon Lightfoot write a song about a 100 year old event? Didn't Don McLean write a song about some dude named "Buddy" who died 146 years ago?
