Default Royal Spelling Bee

The Kansas City Royals agreed Friday to one-year contracts with second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.

Undoubtedly, they'll be the first team in major league history with a first and second basemen both with twelve letters in their name, a "z" and a "k" among them for both.

Cool!

But undoubtedly they'd be one of the many teams in history with a first and second baseman who both suck.

Grudzielanek does not suck. In fact, far from it. He's a damned fine second baseman with great defense.

Eyechart blows, though.

How the hell does a guy like Scott Elarton get a 2-year deal?

2 years is like the minimum for [censored] veteran pitchers.

Hmm, looking at his stats recently, I suppose that in the universe of second basemen, he's not too bad. But a career avg of .330 obp and .390 slg without much power or without much speed doesn't really knock my socks off.

Yes, but,

1) That's about an average line for a 2B over his career
2) He's played about half his games in Dodger stadium.
