Default $1k hand

gotOuts posted a hand (#2 from that post) that's almost exactly analogous to this one a couple days ago...

I suggested he might try a strategy like I use here, where you set up the opponent to bet into you on the river by representing weakness on the flop and turn, so that when your hand hits you can get paid off nicely. But what do you do when the board completes your hand but puts a better one out there also, and the guy bets into you?

I think you have to call
1. it's relatively unlikely he got clubs since backdoor
2. the way you played it he could have a bunch of stuff

you checked the turn to show weakness and induce a bluff. now you gotta call it.

I would call most of the time. Unless my opponent is an uber-rock, I am not laying down the nut straight in fear of a backdoor flush when getting 475:175 on my money. This is a very good spot for villain to bluff, so without a read that he always bets big when bluffing and small when holding the nuts, I am inclined to pay him off if he backdoored a flush. I can't imagine anyone calling a raise without a flush, so I don't see much value in raising. A big raise might get a weak player to lay down a small flush or buy half the pot from another broadway, but this is not a good spot for a bluff-raise IMO, as there is a very good chance that you have the best hand.

Fcuk. I wish I'd thought about this more carefully. In the moment, I took a look at his stats, (something like VPIP 23, PFR 5, wins at 15 BB/100 or something) and pussed out... which now that I think about it more carefully is, if anything, more reason to look him up. Didn't even consider the pot odds. You and Greg are definitely right.
