River goes check-check and he shows 77. I'm just making sure i'm not being too weak-tight, i'm too used to playing shorthanded, but that A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] was not the best card for my hand soo... yeah.

Isn't this a classic example of "Only hands that can beat you will call a bet here"? I guess there's some chance that he capped the flop with a medium pocket pair because he put you a big ace. It is a little fishy that he only coldcalled pre-flop. That makes it feel more like a draw. I'd check call.
