Default What the pro\'s don\'t want you to know

The key to winning at poker is simple. You will win at poker in the long run only if you're playing poker for the right reason. Yes, there is only 1 "correct" reason to play poker. When people talk about their reasons for playing it's always the same "For fun" "For extra money" "To support myself and family". But these are not valid reasons. You can do other stuff to have fun or make extra money. The only reason you should play poker is to get better at poker. If you love poker and approach it with that mindset, you will study hard and think deeply about the game, in turn becoming a solid and intelligent player.

Disagree, there are a million and one factors that can make you a better or worse player, purpose is but a small part. Many things are easily more vital... patience, awareness, pattern detection, mathematical understanding etc.

Yes, but people can improve their patience, awareness, pattern detection, mathematical understanding by studying the game on and off the table given enough time. These are basic human competencies. But, they have to be aware of these things and want to get better.

For example, your study of the game may require you to read a psychology book.

to say that you can only win long run if the only reason you are playing is to get better at poker is totally incorrect.

I dunno man, you're logic reminds me of swiss cheese.

What if I'm some kid who can beat the game for $80 an hour. That's a really good reason to play the game besides, "getting better at poker". I call it, "Making money".

You could continue this line of thought several more levels. What makes you proclaim the desire to improve as the ending point?

PS. This is a dumb thread.
