Default Noise Cancelling Headphones

Any recommendations for multi-hour poker play? My earbuds tend to hurt after a couple of hours. I've used the Bose QuietComfort2 headphones on planes and they are great, and even nice to sleep with them on (no audio). They're a bit pricey, though, at $300. The Sony MDR-NCxx phones are cheaper but I have no experience with them.

that depends. do you want GOOD headphones? bose sucks at making headphones, like really really bad. they make things that cancel noise well, but they sound poor. then it depends on your price range. i have a 300 dollar pair of headphones on my desk. but theyre open and loud, when im at the casino i bring my akg k26p, which were only 50 bucks but imo sound fantastic. at other price ranges, i would say if you wanted to spend ~100, go with the sennheiser hd280pro or the beyerdynamic dt770 for a bit more. both sound fantastic. both of those are full sized headphones. if you want some sealed canalphones which isolate a ton of noice, you should look at either the shure e3s, etymotic research er-6 or the ultimate ears super-fi 3s, both are ~100.

NOTE: none of those headphones are actually "noise cancelling", they are either sealed or closed dynamic headphones. imo there isnt a good noise cancelling headphone in existance yet.

Etymotic ER-4P. Simply short of amazing. They are pricey, but I just recieved mine a few weeks ago and I can't remember life without them.

I don't think any kind of isolation is a good idea for B&M play. That said, though I haven't heard all of them personally, from what I've read PITTM's recommendations sound good to me.

PITTM, I'm curious as to which $300 headphone you have on your desk. I'm going to guess the HD600. Do you read/post at head-fi? For those that don't know, head-fi is the 2plus2 of headphones. I'm currently enjoying my grado SR-225s off a headroom microDAC and a pimeta amp that I built myself.

I agree with Jar, get something open style, like the Sennhieser HD580. Very light, and soft on the head, great sound, and you can still here things going on around you.

yes, theyre the hd-600s, but ive also spent a lot of time listening to the beyerdynamic dt880, which are equally amazing IMO. i am also running them out of a headroom microdac and a portaphile v2. i had a custom cable made and theyre the [censored]. IMO the headroom microdac was probably the best audio purchase ive ever made. especially since i can use it with my marantz 1030b and KEF C40 setup downstairs.

i do post on head-fi. although now rarely since i think the moderators on that board generally run it horrendously. if you want to check out my gear just look under the same handle on there: PITTM. my friend just ordered a pair of HF-1s, which are grado 225s with a wooden chamber made just for head-fi users. you should check those out. although i really am not a grado fan at all. gl.

i dont think he meant that the hd580s would be good for live play at all. they would be horrid. my housemate will sometimes ask me to turn down my headphones at night because she can hear them through the wall. everyone at the table would ask you to turn down your headphones because they are completely open. as i originally said. the sennheiser hd-280s would be better for live play.

I already have a pair of really nice earcup headphones - the Sony MDR-V900s. I DJ for a living and can't live without these. I could simply use them for live play but they're so silly looking at the table due to their size, plus I think they'd limit my hearing at the table which is bad. Of course, any noise cancelling headphones would do the same. Wish I could drown out the noise and announcements of the casino while being able to hear everyone at the table.

I'm a trained audio engineer and always thought the Bose Quietcomfort headphones sounded good. But I've only used them in the air so my perception of them could be askew. I think they look good too. Too bad they're $300.
