A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
This is a fun little hand I played in the Stars $200+15 NL.
Middle stages of the tourney, I have an average stack. I get dealt TT under the gun and raise 3x. MP thinks and thinks some more and finally calls. Others fold. Flop is J84 rainbow. I make a standard bet, about 2/3 of the pot. MP thinks and thinks some more and finally... miniraises. Calling this miniraise will definitely pot-commit me. There is a bit of a read here. My opponent had not been noticably pausing on other hands, so I didn't feel this was simply multitabling or the like. More importantly, from the table chatter and such, I strongly believed that this was not a player who was likely to be Hollywooding it. In other words, I felt pretty strongly that both pauses were legitimate thinks. So what the heck is going on here? |

not a J, at the least...
possible pair of his own, less then 10's .... - I had one guy take an incredible long time once on every hand...I think he musta been looking in a database for pokertracker or something....referencing material before making his move... RB |

Re: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
How tricky was this player? On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is pure ABC and 10 is "I play blind", where would you put him?

Re: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
Pocket nines? Weak play here could indicate a suited 9T also.

Magic 8 ball??
He's trying to think if a miniraise will get you off your AK. I put him on AQ or a pair 55,66,77,99. Of course this is dependent on your read that he actually had a decision, and wasn't hollywooding. |

I'd say maybe a middle pocket pair.

The think is about extracting value - that's not the same as Hollywooding. The miniraise is how he decided to do it. eastbay |

Re: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
I'm reading strong, as well...could be J10 and the reason he's pausing is he's trying to decide whether to raise you or call...his thought process is this: "hmmm, he raised preflop....he COULD have a better J than me...but only if he's got AJ...he wouldn't raise the preflop with QJ or KJ, right? Naaaah....chances are he doesn't even HAVE a J! I bet he's got a smaller PP...let's raise him and find out...but only a little just in case he DOES have AJ..."
That's how I read it. |

RESULTS
Well, for better or for worse, I felt my opponent was actually thinking about both decisions. I thought and thought and decided the only hands that would play this way were TT and 99 and since I had TT, I had to be up against 99.
So I raised all-in and was called and got shown... 99. However a 9 came on the river which just goes to show you that you can get in a lot of trouble by being right. |
