Folding A-set on the river
This happend last night on True poker. I do not have a hand history, so this is from memory:
I had AhAs in late position. EP is loose but not very aggressive. Preflop 4 players limped to me, I raise, called around. Flop is XDD (values are not important, all low cards) checked to a MP player who bets, I raise, EP player cold calls 2, MP calls. Turn is another diamond. EP checks, MP checks, I bet, EP calls, MP folds. River is the Ad! Huzza, got a set! EP bets, Oh oh, four diamonds on board, I fold. Afterwards, I think that I should have called as the pot was large. Any opinions? Thanks |

Re: Folding A-set on the river
do the D's represent [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] or the value or a card? because if they represent a value you folded a boat

Re: Folding A-set on the river
Only diamonds, the values were something like 6 and 3. I don't remember exactly.
There was no boat when I folded. I usually check for stuff like that |

Re: Folding A-set on the river
ep check/calls the wghole way and then bets out when the 4th [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] comes, i think you can fold this, w/o a [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] ep probably checks and hopes for a free showdown...

Re: Folding A-set on the river
Thanks, that was my thinking. But it is awfully hard to lay down a set of As.

Re: Folding A-set on the river
Call it.
Looks bad for you, but the pot is down to heads up, he may have paired the ace or hit two pair. Or he may be using the ace and the diamond to bluff at you figuring you for something like a largish pair. Probably he does have a diamond, and if you have say three oponents its a pretty easy fold, but here I think you make the call. --Zetack |

Re: Folding A-set on the river
Sux. You're probably beat.
But if it was an opponent that I think I'd be seeing a lot of, I'd call to see just how high of a diamond he was willing to bet into me with. Hell, I'd probably call anyway. |

Re: Folding A-set on the river
I don't think you can fold this heads up for one bet. No way.

Re: Folding A-set on the river
I know. On paper, I can sometimes convince myself. At the table, there's no way I'm folding for 1.

Re: Folding A-set on the river
Two thoughts ...
Folding the winner here is a disaster of the Three Mile Island variety (OK, maybe not that bad, but you get the point. And if you don't know of TMI, do yourself a favor and look it up so you can appreciate my attempt at humor). But calling down for one bet and losing isn't nearly as bad, especially for a pot of this size. In fact, for one bet, I think it would be almost impossible for me to lay down a set of any kind (a board like the one mentioned with several overcalls to me might get me to fold), much less top set. |
