I always thought it was a bet you throw into the pot like a donk when you absolutely blank the flop/turn and are just trying to push people out

In general, a donkbet is a bet out on a street when the player was not the last aggressor on the previous street. Some people insist that the definition says it's only on the turn, and some people say it has to be HU, but the first definition is common usage. It's synonymous with gaybet, but that term has fallen out of favor, for obvious reasons.

Edit: BTW, I don't think this is a "no content" post, per se. I was expecting another post where some idiot does his thing. You might instead want to mark posts like this as "question, no hand," or something.

To add to this, I thought the term implies that the turn card (or river card) was a blank.

Additionally, there is some difference between a donkbet and a stop-n-go that elludes me right now.

Donk bet comes from someone who has shown no aggression. Stop n' go from someone who has.

Flop: mp checks, co checks, button bets, all call
Turn: mp bets

MP just donkbet.

Flop: mp bets, co calls, button raises, all call
Turn: mp bets

MP just stop n' goed.

A donk bet is when a weak player limps with something like K9, you raise with AA, the flop is 455 and he bets out.

Donkbet has nothing to do with being ahead or behind. It merely describes an unexpected bet from someone who has shown no previous aggression but suddenly does when acting before the expected aggressor.
