Miscellaneous World Series Thoughts (O/T obviously)
--
I'm not a Red Sox fanatic like many around here but I'm pretty happy for the (seemingly) impending title for them. They have some great, passionate fans. Mostly I'm happy for guys like Johnny Pesky. As a shortstop in 1946 his hesitation on a ground-ball let the Cardinals comeback and win game 7. Pesky, now 85 years old, says he prays every year for a Red Sox championship. He's been with the team for the past 60 years in some capacity or another and it's people like him who I am most happy for. -- Will the city of Boston survive tonight (assuming the Red Sox clinch)? It might look like a nuclear bomb went off there. -- Is anyone getting REALLY REALLY TIRED of that damn U2 song that they seem to play during every other commercial break? I don't even think it's a very good song (but I'm old school when it comes to U2....Joshua Tree and earlier for the most part). -- Jeannie Zalasko still drives me up the freaking wall. I just don't think she's very good. -- Remember the days when they showed non-stop shots of the players' wives? Man, I sure don't miss that. Now they try to bombard you with shots of cute kids and over-emotional fans praying to some sort of baseball god or something. It's a bit cliche....but I'll take it over the players' wives. Although I just saw a SLOW-MOTION replay of some older lady in Cardinal Red (I assume) crossing her fingers and trying to will her team to score some runs. C'mon...does it have to be in slow-mo?? -- My own personal jinx is longer than the Red Sox OR the Cubs. There has been at least one world-series game played on every single date in October EXCEPT for Oct 29 which just happened to be my birthday. My best friend in grade-school has a birthday of Oct 22 and would very frequently get a World-Series game on his birthday and ALWAYS made it a point to rub it in. But there still somehow has never been a W.S. game on an Oct 29. In fact, every day from Sept 28 through Nov 1 has been covered by at least 1 game (and also Nov 3 and 4). Close calls include - 1911 - 6 days of rain-outs. W.S. doesn't finish until Oct 26. 1981 - mid-season strike and split-season playoff format stretch the post-season. LA wins the series on Oct 28 in game 6. Oct 29 WOULD have been gm 7. 1989 - Earthquake causes 12-day delay between games 2 and 3. Games 3 and 4 are Oct 27 and 28. Game 5 would have been on Oct 29 but OAK had already swept. 1999 - Yankees sweep on Oct 27. But the 29th would have been a travel day anyway. 2000 - Yankees win in 5 games on Oct 26. Games 6 and 7 would have been on the 28th and 29th. 2001 - 9/11 attacks push everything back a week. W.S. games 1 and 2 are on Oct 27, 28....then Oct 29 is a travel day. 2004 - Oct 29 is scheduled as a travel-day anyway....but a rain-out could have changed that. Not sure what the schedule looks like for 2005. I find it kind of interesting.....but I don't expect anyone else to. |

Re: Miscellaneous World Series Thoughts (O/T obviously)
the first thing i saw when i turned the game on after class was the slow motion old lady crossing her fingers. i hate fox coverage soooo much, mostly because i absouletely cannot stand joe buck for even 2 seconds. that being said ive probably watched a combined hour of this world series even though im a huge baseball fan.
i think the red sox get way too much credit for being the underdog. wow, you guys only have like the 3rd highest payroll in the league! you slayed the 1st highest payroll dragon! what loveable losers. i actually like tony larussa because i was a huge athletics fan when i was younger and i like most of the cardinals players, but their pitching is so lame you just knew they would get killed. what a boring world series. you wouldnt imagine how many red sox "fans" have come out of the woodwork in my town on the other side of the country from boston. it reminds me of when the angels won in 2002, where did all those millions of angels fans go? im not sure. all in all a lame world series. rj |

i don't think the red sox are being portrayed as underdogs. i think they just haven't won a world series in 86 years and that's that. nobody thinks they are underdogs. they were actually favored in the series vs. the yankees, and also were favored in this WS if i'm not mistaken.

Re: Miscellaneous World Series Thoughts (O/T obviously)
the thing is, the Red Sox were such a big story in MLB, do you think that maybe interest in baseball will fade now that the Red Sox have finally won, or do you think all the interest will be shifted to Chicago?

Posted this in the other other topics forum (not a place I visit often). In England it will shift to Chicago now. I'm sure in Boston it will only strengthen support. I also think there will be a lot of people die in the next three weeks of incredible old age as they've fought 20 years beyond their years to see this day. Lori |

I wonder how silly the people that left game four early in the Yankees series feel now?

Re: Miscellaneous World Series Thoughts (O/T obviously)
As long as they play in lovable Fenway the Sox will be an amusing team to follow, but no doubt the nation's misery pole has shifted several hundred miles West towards Chi-town. The Yanks have yet to win a WS in this century...may the curse of Alex "Kung Fu" Rodgriguez reign 86 years! (that had to be the real reason behind tonight's lunar eclipse) Insp. |
