Default Can anyone win at poker

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a professional basketball player. I practiced hard, but never was able to achieve it. It really didn't matter how hard I practiced because I just didn't have the natural ability that is required in order to achieve professional status...

But what about poker. Is it possible for anyone to learn this, e.g could a bum off the street find some 2+2 books and learn it... or do you think that there is some natural ability required?

I think I could train anyone to be a winning player at low limits, but to make a living I think you need some ability.

I like the superfluous 2s on the turn and river.

Well played.

It's kind of like asking, can anyone who needs to lose weight do it? Most people CAN...as in they know how and it's not complicated. But it's hard to do.

Learning basic poker strategy (and even moderately advanced strategy) is not hard...having the mental and emotional discipline to do it while bored/tired/frustrated/losing money, etc. is hard.

We all know people who have read all the books but still suck because they can't play tight and just love to gamb00l it up.

To take your basketball analogy:

No, not everyone can play at NBA level. But damn near everyone can beat a bunch of 4th graders.

The beauty of poker is, that unlike in bball where you'd have to be damn near NBA quality to make money, you can make decent money beating 4th graders.

I say no because of the mentalness of the swings involved.
and compulsive gambling behavior.

Natural ability? Not so much.

Natural drive? Definitely.
