Chacon and Small
What is the deal with them?
Chacon has a 1.42 ERA in 3 starts with the Yankees. Small has a 2.67 ERA in 4 starts with them. These guys are better than Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina both this year. And now the Yankees are talking about removing these guys from the rotation when Kevin Brown and Jaret Wright get back. Are the Yankee bigwigs idiots? Are they really going to screw with what is working for them and shelve two good pitchers for two oft injured sissies? |

Re: Chacon and Small
Doesn't look like it's going to make much difference for the Yankees anyway.
But Chacon might be a good pitcher going forward; it's doubtful Small has much future. If I were running the team, I'd release Kevin Brown and I'd put Wright in the bullpen. Meanwhile they're not back yet, Pavano has had a setback and Johnson has a bad back and they don't know who they're going to start in his place. Wing and a prayer . . . |

Re: Chacon and Small
They said that they're starting Proctor tomorrow and that Pavano is likely out for the season. I suspect that Wright is tomorrow so it is likely that Chacon and Small will be starting for the rest of the regular season.
If you think that someone like Al "I'll walk the park" Leiter gives them a better chance to win than Small then you are mistaken. The Yankees will be making a stupid mistake if they favor experience over talent. |

Re: Chacon and Small
If Pavano, Wright and Wang are out for the season, that leaves:
Johnson Mussina Small Leiter Chacon Brown (?) I'd rather see Small pitching than Leiter too. And either of them over Brown. |

Re: Chacon and Small
I'd take Chacon and Small into the postseason instead of Leiter.
Unit Mussina Chacon Small would not be that awful of a rotation for the Yankees with their offense. They could certainly make a run at it with that. This all assumes that the Yankees win the wild card of course, which is looking less and less likely. |

Re: Chacon and Small
If the Yankees had 5 league avg. starters (think Jason Johnson) they would win 95-100 games. Amazing that with 200+ million they can't even be league average SP. By the way, why isn't Coulter Bean in the majors?
54 G 60.2 IP 44 H 71/34 SO/BB 4 HR .201 AVG Sure seems like a guy that could help out the yankee bullpen Grrrrrrrrr, -Ftball |

I think they gave him a try earlier this year.

He certainly can't be any worse than Franklin or Embree. All I know is that they are idiots if they take Chacon and Small out of the rotation with the way these guys are pitching, just like they would be idiots to take Wang out of the rotation if he was healthy. |
