Thoughts on this type of tournmanet structure
Im playing in this tournament this weekend and wanted your thoughts of the structure.
There will 8 tables with 7 players at each table. Total 56. Its a $150 buyin, no rebuys. Its like a shootout tourney, where you have to win your table to proceed to the final table of 8 players. You get T3000 in chips and the blinds are as follows, the levels last only a half hour. Level 1- 50/100 Level 2 - 100/200 Level 3 - 150/300 Level 4 - 200/400 you play until theres one winner for each table Final table 300/600, then 400/800, 500/1000, 1000/2000. Payouts: FINAL TABLE PAYOUTS FIRST ROUND PAYOUTS 1ST PLACE: 30% RUNNER UP: 1% 2ND PLACE: 15% ( 8 PLAYERS ) 3RD PLACE: 12% 4TH PLACE: 10% 5TH PLACE: 9% 6TH PLACE: 8% TOTAL OF 100% OF PRIZE $ 7TH PLACE: 5% 8TH PLACE: 3% |

Re: Thoughts on this type of tournmanet structure
Well, it's a crapshoot from the beginning, but at least you'll be done pretty quick. Probably the whole thing is done within 4 hours.
I mean, with 50,100 blinds to start, a standard raise is 300, and a standard reraise would be about 900. But, since 900 is 30% of your stack (at the start), it will often make sense to just go all-in instead. Thus, each hand in this event will have no more than 2-3 decisions, occasionally 4 decisions. Not a lot of play. ;-) Of course, not a lot of play isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just means luck will be a larger factor than it needs to be. But, if there is a time limit to getting it done, then that's the best you can do. Later, Greg Raymer (FossilMan) |

Re: Thoughts on this type of tournmanet structure
Here's what I see:
56 players @ 150 = $8400 FINAL TABLE! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2520 1st Overall 1260 2nd 1008 3rd 840 4th 756 5th 672 6th 420 7th 252 8th 8 Runner Up's at each table get $84 each. (much less than the $150 buy in). Obviously - Winning your table is great, top 6 should be your second goal. (* It basically becomes a new SNG once you start the final table. All players are even in chips.*) A runner up still just bad, but better than getting nothing. I do believe that the blinds are quick, but you are playing 7 at a table, just a bit quicker than 9. Also, depending on the actual chips they give you. Your bets may be a direct reflection of the chips given. (ie. They give you 8–25’s, 8-100’s and 2-500’s – Bets will be larger as a result of player not wanting to break up chips vs. the betting will be much different that if they gave out 20-25’s, 10-100’s and 1-500). I would treat it like I was sitting at the average stack after 2 hours of play, as opposed to a standard sit and go. May I suggest the speed SNG’s at Stars for practice, or Party, they have a tourn. where the blinds go up every 3 minutes. That may be good practice. As for the overall set up, I do like the freeze out, especially for a home game where few player have any idea, nonetheless it maybe their first tournament ever. I would also consider playing very tight but try to steal blinds, since other will panic when the blinds are raised. It is a worthy payout if you can get a seat at the final table. good luck. |

Thanks for your reponses. Should I take coinflips in the early rounds...or should I remain tight? I know I wont that much room to manuever.

Re: Thoughts on this type of tournmanet structure
I would play the 1st table like $50 SNG at stars. Tight, and slightly agressive. I enjoy slow playing at these freeze outs, because every one is so catious, or just all-in.
Others may give you better advice. Good luck. |
