Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
Looks like you're against A-10s, possibly clubs. Right?

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
That's a miserable turn card.
But he cold called a 5xBB raise, and bet out on the flop. Could be JA. Could be TJ, though I suspect he would have re-raised and put you in on the flop. If the card scares him as much as it scares you, he could have an overpair (not that likely), or worse, JJ, and you're drawing dead. He might also have two big clubs (JAc??) and you're way ahead. Tough to fold, but you're still a healthy stack around T3000 if you do. With him well covered, I think I'd call, knowing I'm not crippled if I lose showdown. (PS -- my first post. Long-time reader -- these forums are terrific, and I enjoy the insights of everyone.) |

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
I think A10 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] slows down here not bet out.
I think the push by SB is fear of the high straight. You would think that an overpair would have re-raised all in on the flop bet, or re-raised the PF bet. Another set is possible given that your PF raise was called. If you read them making a loose call with less than JJ or 99 then call. (could be a very poorly played AK-J trying to rep the straight) I would probably call, but not feel great about it. regards, woodguy |

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
Well....
BB is only T20, so it's obviously early in the tourney. I've seen people try to double-up early with much worse hole cards and flops than that. |

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
Do you have any read on this player? What is your table image? What is the tourney buyin? Without a read, I probably call at the buyins that I play, because against a Ten I still have 10 outs, and I could see this happening enough times with hands that you beat (A9, AA/KK/QQ, AK/AQ/AJ). At a higher buyin I just don't see him having AT, I guess I would be worried about him having JJ or 99, but I can't see a good player flatcalling (and calling preflop) a board like that with AA/KK, nor do I see them trying to play it that way with overcards. TT I don't think would immediately push, since you raised the flop, nor do I see JTs doing this.
Did he have JJ? |

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
I like this fold. In my experience these bets mean your opponent made his hand and is hoping you won't be able to fold. Ive folded a straight to a flush card in almost exactly the same circumstance.

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
Sure, it's early, but you have 1400 people to go through to just make the money. You're getting 2.4:1 here so if you're ahead 1/4 of the time your call is probably +EV. Plus, you're still alive if you lose.
I'd call. |

Re: I don\'t like to lay down sets
I had the almost exact same hand Saturday night. $50 home tourney, guy to my right is a new player. Earlier he asked, "How do these blind things work?" First hand he bets 30% of his stack on A5 when an ace flops. I've got AJ behind him, and I have no idea what to do - anyway the hand in question I have 88 with a flop of 789. He makes a large bet, I figure he's got a piece of the board, since he's been over-playing his hands all night. I push him all-in and he calls with JT. Mr. Clueless won the 19 player tourney beating 3 or 4 other pretty good players with similar hands and some drawouts.
