Default Is fearing \'dentist criticism\' normal?

When I was young, I used to fear going to the dentist because of uncomfort during the cleaning, and slight pain when I got cavities drilled.

When I hit 16/17 I got over that, realizing the pain was mental. But things that started bothering me then was being criticized by the dentist. I have had some hereditary cavity problems, after brushing 2x a day and flossing, I still have gotten steady cavities over the years. Luckily my teeth are white, straight, and I never have pain, so I never feel too concerned (as long as I have good insurance to process fillings or future root canals.)

My problem is I still get all anxious about the doctor giving me criticism to my decay and gingivitis. To make things worse, it has been about 18 months since my last visit, and I am sure I will be nagged at for having such a long period between visits.

Anyways, any other 'adults' get these or other anxieties from going to the dentist? I kind of hoped it would all end with childhood.

i also hate going to the dentist. I always get the gingivitis lecture, and how i should take better care of my teeth (although ive yet to have an actual cavity). I dont know about the pain being mental though... it hurts.

Im pretty sure we're not alone on this

My teeth are decayed and chipped. They hurt a lot. I'm never going to that dentist. Novacaine does nothing.

Dentist: Do you brush, Bart?
Bart Simpson: Yes, sir.
Dentist: Why must you turn this into a House of Lies?

I don't care for the dentist lectures much either. Lots of tooth decay is really hereditary, even if you take fantastic care of your teeth, and lots of dental health is hereditary even if you eat crap and take terrible care of your teeth. Oh well, can't have everything.

I think dentists should give annoying lectures. That is what you are paying them for. Would you hire a poker coach and ask him to go easy on you when you play like [censored]?

The last time I went to the dentist, approximately 5 years ago, she complimented me several times on the health of my teeth. It was surreal.

I went to college with my dentist. He played rugby. He has false teef.

I'm fortunate to have a good set of choppers. Had a cavity once, when I was 10 or so.
