357 poker question

Does anyone else here play 357 in their dealer's choice games? I had a question about the three-card round. I had just taught my family how to play it and we were on about the third hand when my dad showed a pair of aces down against my cousin's JQK, which he claimed was a three-card straght. He had assumed that the round of three used a ranking system like the three-card poker or three-card monte casino table games. When I was taught the game over a year ago, three-card straights and flushes in the three-card round weren't mentioned. What should my ruling have been?

We play 2-3-5 in our home games from time to time, and the 3 card level is always just high cards, pairs and trips. I don't know if there's acutal rules anywhere, though. Now you know to mention it (one way or the other) when calling the game.

If I found myself in your situation, if I believed the guy did not actually know how we played (had never played with us before) I'd probably let him take his bet back.

On another note, and maybe this is how it is always played, but if (say) two of five stay in to play any round before the last, (2 & 3 in our game) do only the players see the cards (not the passers) or is the winner tabled for all to see?

When I play 357, after the players evaluate their hands, they hold their hands about an inch or two above the table and drop their cards on the count of three if they want to show down. This could be on any round. Those who choose to go in should have to show their cards to everyone, because there's no position like in hold 'em. That's how I play it, anyway.

Everyone sees the cards shown down, but you show only the cards you need to win (i.e. player one shows KK, player two shows A3 and not his A35).

This is how I play. More interesting that way.

There are no 3 card str8s / flushes. Best 5 card hand wins.

In GUTS there can be 3 card hands, but thats a different game.

Rules:
3 cards are dealt to each player who must decide to pass or stay in, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. For this first round, 3's are wild and three-of-a-kind is the best hand (next best: pair, followed by a high card). All those "in" show their cards only to each other and the winner takes the pot with the losers matching the pot. If only one player is in or there is a tie, that player (and those involved in a tie) gain a "leg" (chip). Two more cards are dealt (to everyone) and now 5's are wild. Again, players pass or are in, same as above with the highest 5-card hand winning the pot. Last round: two more cards are dealt to everyone and now 7's are wild. Same play with the highest 5-card hand winning the pot. 3 legs (chips) will also win the pot. Maximum numbers of players is seven.

In our home game for the 3 card round we play the best hand is 357, the 2nd best is AAA...then goes down to high card and kickers. Flushes and Straights do not count. Glad to see others play this game. We always play this game in a "match pot" format.

I've seen people play it both ways. I would guess without straights and flushes is more common, but who knows?

Without pre-rules on the hand values, tough to make a ruling. I say the 3-card hands should be

Straight flush
Trips
Straight
Flush
Pair
High card

Otherwise, pairs have too much power.
