Default No Poker Rate at MGM Grand

I called the MGM Grand poker room today and talked to a woman who said they didn't have a poker rate and didn't have any immediate plans to start one.

Somebody please tell me that the woman I spoke to was wrong. I'd love to stay that the MGM and play in their new room, but I'm not going to stay there if I have to pay the full rate.

Well seems different people have different answers. One floor told me that you can use your comp dollars towards your room, but comps max at like 10 bucks a day. Stay somewhere cheap and play there is the alternative. San Remo is accross the street with the Trop.

I heard that a poker room rate is in the works, so I guess it depends on what the definition of "immediate plan" is -- For the record, I'm expecting to see a published poker room rate within a few months (perhaps 3 to 6 months?).

Also, remember that MGM owns Mirage and Bellagio, which both offer poker room rates.

Well, I just spent the weekend playing at the MGM, and since their poker room is so new, they really haven't figured out the comps and poker rates yet. (For example, it took days for our comps to show up on our cards. we had to go to multiple desks to find out how many comps we had in the first place. and multiple dealers clocked people in to the wrong seats.) i'd imagine that the poker room rate is another kink that they are going to work out eventually, but right now, no one seems to know what they are doing comp-wise.

I stayed at San Remo in December and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of accomodations and service. I didn't need much -- a clean room to sleep in and some basic things connected to that, and San Remo provided more than adequately. The location is fantastic, a 2 or 3 minute walk to the main MGM entrance, 3 or 4 minutes to Excalibur and NYNY, and mot much more than that to other points. Given the great low-limit action at Excal and now at MGM, I think San Remo is a steal for the value-conscious poker player. Be advised that they're undergoing renovation to become the hooters casino, so there may be some dust, but I get the impression it won't affect service too much.

I used to stay a the Tropicana a few years back. It's older and more beat up but has a nice pool area and if what I'm understanding about the poker room location probably closer to the MGM poker room than MGM rooms are. I've only stayed at the MGM once but the rooms are waaaaay back and about 14 miles from the front where the poker room sounds like it is.

The Trop probably costs about half the MGM and probably still less than any upcoming poker rate.

I played 69 hours of poker at the MGM last week and amassed $27 in comps! I was with four friends (3 rooms) and they are fairly big players of the negative EV table games. They got comp rooms. They managed to get me a room at the casion rate ($159/night) but I don't think this would have happened as a result of my poker play. The place was sold out - so they are overly anxious to discount. After my 69 hours, I tried to get something additional off my room and they wouldn't budge. That said, the MGM has a great poker room -- you can check out my trip report in the News, Views, Gossip thread.
