Default Keeping your cards visible

Are there any rules about keeping your cards visible? Besides keeping them on the table, do you have to have them in a place where everyone can see them?

One of the first times I ever went to a B&M, I didn't know I had to keep them exposed. I placed them behind my chips one time. The dealer knew I was still in the hand but a few players didn't.

This one old guy yelled at me: "Well you can't keep your cards underneath your dick!"

LOL, actually, having your cards behind your chips techinically constitutes a bet/all-in. Never seen it actually happen though where a player was all in becuase his cards were behind his chips.

This is only in rooms where they are unfamiliar with poker.

Why would you not leave them where everyone can see?
The way I see it is, if you're hiding them, you're either:
a) cheating, or
b) setting up problems that will slow up the game.

In both cases you're entitled to a kick in tha' nuts!

I've seen dealers warn players that they may be considered to have called/made a bet because the chips were in front of they're hidden cards. In one case a player asked for the floor on a player who had been warned twice. Cost the guy $500.
He threw his cards in the dealer's face and was promptly escorted out.

Keep 'em where everyone can see 'em. It keeps the game moving and may save you trouble.

Yes I understand there are rooms that do this. Generally these rooms are in places like AC that have exactly 0 people on the staff that understand poker.

Also protect them with a chip or something.

I have seen a dealer take cards from the same player over and over. Even after being warned he still would not protect them. His complaints did not get him any sympathy just apathy.
