Default Getting a job in casino mgmt ..

A week or so ago I had an interview with Harrahs.

During the interview they told me that basically the only way to land a casino mgmt job was to work my way up from a dealer position.

Is this true for pretty much every casino?

I am well qualified for a management position and I have had a couple great management offers already, but casino management seems the most appealing to me.

Should I keep hunting for a casino management job or take a "regular" management job in something that is of average interest to me?

Any advice will be most appreciated.
Thanks again.

Take the regular one and then keep looking while working, but it sounds like it is one of those industries that looks to hire from within.

What was your major or area of concentration? I ask because I am looking into this for a career and am not sure if i should emphasis travel and tourism for my major or if all that matters is a business degree.

I have a Purdue business mgmt degree, a mgmt minor and a business psych minor (also I was 1 class short of my Internet biz minor). I also have a small deal of hotel management experience due to the fact that many of my accounting and mgmt classes were out of the Hotel and Tourism dept (Purdue is #1 in the nation for this).

EDIT: I would imagine that a HTM (hotel and tourism mgmt) degree would be the most ideal for landing a job like this.

It depends what you want to manage in the casino. If you want to manage the hotle you dont' have to know much about gaming. If you want to manage the casino itself you have to know dealing procedures etc (you have to have been a dealer). I know of a couple of exceptions, but those are few and far between and they got juiced in years ago when the business was smaller and casinos were owned by individuals and they knew the owners. There might also be some exceptions when new markets open up to casino gaming.

Any form of casino management, as far as poker or table games is concerned, requires a background in the casino business. Casino management can't be taught. I'd rather work for a manager with 25 years dealing experience with no degree than a fresh graduate with no experience anyday. There are some thing that just can't be taught.
