Villian is 40/3 and loves to see showdowns - gets married to top pair, etc...feel free to kick me

if you dont raise flop, definitely raise MORE on the turn

plus if you say he gets married to top pair, you should be raising flop

As you played it, I prob fold on river.

However turn raise is bad, make it 9.

Yeah these are one of those bummer hands that you wonder if you coulda won if you pushed out early. Probably could have pushed him out on the turn, however, a J on the river is the only card that you're worried about, so it makes you wonder if it's better to push him out or keep him in for another bet on the river.

And this time the J hit, and ur most likely beat. I'd fold too.

raise flop...raise more on turn. If your chips arent allin yet then fold river.

I think a fold here is fine. Like was stated below the J is the only card that could really hurt you especially bc of your read on villian. You win the majority of these hands when his top pair doesnt improve, this appears to be one of the few times it did.

The fold on the end is pretty clear. You need to raise the flop, especially against players who get commited with mid strenght hands.
