If it's a "must straddle game," then effectively it's just a game with three blinds, no?

blind 1: 30
blind 2: 60
blind 3: 120

I wouldn't even think of it anymore as a straddle, it's just a third blind.

youre saying that its bad ethics to make a player turn over his hand after hes indicated that hes lost? like when someone bets into me on the river and i call in position and he does the i cant win look i dont turn over my hand until he turns over his. for one i want to see his cards but i also want to give him a chance to muck the winner in case i actually lost. i shouldnt be doing this?

Exactly. I feel the same way about this guy and the guy who makes the guy flip his cards after he has announced his losing hand.

There are very few better feelings in gambling than saying "Ace high" to the guy who always makes you flip your cards, having him make you flip your cards and then revealing the nuts and then invoking "Cards speak, sorry"

They rarely do it again.

I totally agree. What's wrong with following the proper etiquette? Why is the guy who wants to follow the proper procedure, the one who "paid to see your hand" a dick when he asks you to show the hand in the order its supposed to be shown?

Maybe we're talking about something different..

I disagree that it's +EV. It increases the luck element in the game substantially.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think so. It really hurts hands that rely on implied odds, hands like small pairs and suited connectors. The good player can now raise the straddle and charge the bad players even more to try and draw out on him.

Your premium hands really go up in value, the loose/bad players won't adjust and will play there normal game and hands that are small mistakes will be medium mistakes.

Why not just play it like a 120-240 game? Then all you have to change is your bankroll requirements. Yes the straddle is a random hand, but so is the BB in standard games.

Because it's not a 120/240 game. The bets on the flop are half of what it costs you to see the flop. The bets on the turn are the same as what it costs you to see the flop. This means you need to start out with better hands, because you're not getting paid as much (relative to your initial investment).

This is similar to a post Clark had about 2 or 3 years ago - which was the best structure for a good player: 6-6-6-6, 4-4-8-8, or 3-3-6-12? The answer is the 6-6-6-6 game because it punishes players who start off with worse hands (because they can't make up as much at the end of the hand). This game is like a 6-3-6-6 (which favors the good players) because of the higher cost of entering the pot and the lower return on drawing hands. Big cards go up, drawing hands go down.

most straddles in live games occur on the button, with the straddle having last option.
