I know bad beats happen and me calling the raise on the river wasn't the smartest thing in the world. But what should I have done differently?

I mean Q7 to the bets I was making was terrible right?

With those limpers, you have to raise more pf. Especially in 25NL, or everyone is going to call. Also, the flop bet was way too low.

Preflop is not terrible; ATs is a fine speculative hand, so it's fine to raise slightly less than one might normally to build the pot a little. You should recognize, however, that with limpers this raise usually not enough to limit the field & cut odds; 4xBB + 1BB / limper is considered standard.

Preflop bet is inexcusable. You have a vulnerable hand on a draw-heavy board that badly needs both protection & to find out where it's at. I'd bet between 3/4 and 100% of the pot here. Villian made a dubious play preflop, but played his hand correctly postflop, and you let him. This sort of thing happens all the time at low stakes, so you MUST bet the flop like you mean it.

This isn't a bad beat, this is a misplayed hand. First thing I'd do differently is fold preflop, ATs is a marginal drawing hand and needs position. If for some reason I didn't fold I'm betting the pot on this flop and 2/3 on the turn. If it made it to the river most of my money would be in anyhow so I think you'd have to see it through.

I appreciate all the help. I agree I should have raised it more on the flop. I think mixing it up really helps. If I was a great player I wouldn't ask for advice but I'm obviously not.....I still don't think A-10 is too bad of a hand to play. I agree typically you raise with higher hands in early positions. But I can't become too predictable. I think that kind of a flop is exactly what I was looking for, right? So I should have bet about 4 on the flop?

I didn't imply that you were a bad player, just that this hand was poorly played. Feel free to ask for all the advice you want, we're all here to learn and ask questions.

[ QUOTE ]

I still don't think A-10 is too bad of a hand to play.

[/ QUOTE ]

You're right ATs is not a bad hand to play. It is much much easier to play with position though. Playing a hand
like AT from OOP, you will frequently find yourself with tough decisions to make.

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely. If pf raise was designed to mix it up I like it. If it's your standard line , I don't like it so much.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well it's not a horrible flop, but it's far from being a great flop. I would probably bet full pot or close to it, but thats because I always bet that way whether I have a hand or not. Any bet 2/3 the pot or more should be fine though. JMO
