Default An American\'s first English football/cricket bets

All on Bet360, for Sunday (my first online sports bets ever actually)

$70 on Man United to win at Newcastle (4/7). Newcastle has been absolutely awful so far this season under Graeme Souness, and even at St. James' I don't think they reverse it quite yet.

$300 on England to win the Fourth Ashes Test over Australia at Nottingham (3/10). This one's over. Even if Clarke/Katich and co. manage to make England bat again (which they probably will), Australia's bowlers are so banged up and frankly demoralized that there's no way to make the miracle occur. Also, if I was Australia, I make sure McGrath is out there for the 5th and deciding Test if he can so much as stand up and walk, and if not I'd simply let the quicks get the shine off the ball and let Warne go at the English batsmen in long spells. It's their best shot at retaining the Ashes.

$100 on Michael Clarke not scoring a second-innings century in the Fourth Ashes Test (2/5) - Went with my gut on this one. I don't think Clarke can come up with his maiden Test century under these kinds of circumstances.

$30 that the first dismissal of Day 4 of the Ashes Test will be clean bowled (4/1). - Ditto. Just a hunch.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I always find it funny listening or reading about "non-amercican" sports. Because, I always wonder if there is a lot of edge in these games if you study them well, since the majority of books have U.S. based customers. Any thoughts, Tech or Sublime?

I agree with your opinion on Newcastle not turning it around yet, especially with only one healthy striker forcing them to play an unfamiliar formation.

My only problems with the bet is that Manchester picked up a couple of injuries in their match on Wednesday and the price that you got is pretty bad. I rarely bet on a team in their second match of the week against a rested team. MU will have to prove to me that they are back to their winning ways at this point.

I would suggest that you watch the opening lines that come out on Wednesday if you are planning on betting on any of the big name clubs. MU opened at 4/5 on Wednesday and now you are betting on them at 4/7. You can usually get the opening line through Friday morning or later Friday night here in the US. You just have to be aware of the time difference to England to make sure that you get your bet in before the big names odds start to drop quickly on Friday night or Saturday morning.

I think that there is a pretty decent edge in betting on soccer games. My method has been to bet on top teams playing at terrible or even average teams if the price is even money or better. I've been finding over .500 on road teams against under .500 at home teams getting these prices.

You will usually get 2 or 3 games each weekend if you scour the major leagues in Europe and even the US. I usually put in a couple of hours a week on ESPNsoccernet to do the research on the good teams in the various leagues and to watch for important injuries.

If you would like, I would be willing to post my list of teams in the major leagues that I watch for the odds. I will also post the games that I'm looking at when the opening lines come out. Next weekend probably won't have any games since the major leagues are off for international matches. I will post anything that pops up for the weekend, but I doubt there will be much.

Is there teams like in Baseball and American Football that the public generally bets on? Can you PM me your record over the last few seasons? Including the amount won?

There are definitely teams that the public jumps all over and moves the line like in baseball and football. The original poster's Manchester United bet being a great example. MU opened at -125 and are now at -190 with 45 minutes to go until kickoff. I wouldn't be surprised to see this close at -200 or larger. You can see why I suggested that the OP get bets on the name teams in as early as possible.

This is only my first full season of betting on soccer after making sporadic picks for the 3 prior seasons, so my results may not prove anything, but last year I was up 7 units over 45 bets. The win/loss was 24-21. My record this year is 5-3 for up 3.1 units.

I am only a small, recreational bettor that does a great deal of homework for small bets. However, I am more than willing to share my thoughts on anything that I find.

Well, I know nothing about soccer. But, I think a lot of the "american based" sportsbooks could offer a lot of value. Of course, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Maybe we can make a learning "trade" of some kind. I can help you with baseball and american football and you can help me with soccer. PM if interested.

Why the hell not? Cricket is a sport. I enjoy watching it. If I could find anyone in this country who played seriously, I'd enjoy playing it. I bet on it. Hence it fits the topic, "sports betting".

And, not to get too immodest about it, but I would lay pretty decent odds that I could not only beat the pants off -any- American-born sports fan in a cricket trivia contest, but that I could do the same to, say, 85% of the Brit and Aussie sports fans out there. Including, most likely, you.
