Default Should I be betting the with overs when I don\'t have the lead?

PokerStars 1/2 Hold'em (5 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is BB with 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. UTG posts a blind of $1.
UTG (poster) checks, MP calls, 1 fold, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (4 SB) 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, Hero....?

There is no standard play here. I think betting out here would constitute a "move". Moves are extremely situation dependent, they have a lot to do with the mood and flow of the table. Normally, 3 opponents is more than you want for making a move like this.

Check/raising a late bettor would actually be a more typical move here. You can also check/call the flop and check/raise certain turns. You can also check/fold the flop. You could also have raised this pre-flop.

Why is check/call not an option under certain circumstances?

Because I personally would not think to do it in this circumstance. I check/folded here, but I wasn't sure if it was "routine."

This is the type of play that can not be looked at in a vacuum. It depends on how they have been playing, how much they have been folding for the most part. Plus how have you been playing over the past 15 hands or so? If you have shown down a lot of garbage you should just move on. Although if the table is respecting you then fire away.

Yeah. The reason I remember it is because I felt my image was good at that point in the constantly shifting table dynamics and that I had better than normal folding equity after showing down some monsters. That combined with having not lead from the BB yet and it made me question the check/fold.

This is excellent thinking.

You still have to decide where to spend this equity. You chose not to spend it here, which I think was a fine choice. Shopping is fun.
