Default Dell 2001 FP with laptop

Just got my Dell 2001FP.
Plugged it in turned it on. Nothing happens.
When I boot up my machine, I get Windows launch screens on the laptop monitor and the 2001fp.
But after that, nothing but a weird flicker if I move my mouse to the new monitor.
What settings do I need to check in the Display screen? Do I need new drivers or another video card?

I have a basic HP laptop, about a year old, if that helps.

Control Panel => Appearance and Themes => Display => Settings

Click on monitor 2 => Set to 1600x1200 Resolution => Click "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" => OK

It might be slightly different if you don't have XP, but this is how I set mine up - works great.

I use a laptop with a Samsung 213.

PEACE

This works great if I select 1400x1050.
But if I selcect 1600x1200, the monitor goes crazy. It looks like a scrambled tv channel.
No clue what's going on. Help would be much appreciated, since Dell is of no help.

your video card may not be able to support 1600x1200 on the 2nd screen.

What is the resolution on your laptop?
