Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
[ QUOTE ]
I was hoping to bike on the secondary streets if I need to head down south. [/ QUOTE ] That'll be an interesting tour. It may be safer to bike on the strip, at night, wearing black clothing. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
I live in vegas and just spent a grand on a bike. It is a nice place if you can find areas to avoid cars - which is going to be hard downtown or on the strip, or off the strip. I am on the south side of town in all new developments and it is a great time of year to ride. Just do it earlier in the day when everyone is at work.
If you want to rent a bike, there are a few upscaly type places on Charelston, both mountain and road, but those should rented only if you intend to go out to Red Rock Canyon and ride. Or to Bootleg Canyon. But they are pricy. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
Spook:
Thanks about the info. I know there are some speciality place that rent Mountain Bikes in particular for rides out to Red Rock etc. But as you said those bikes are costly and secondly they are not the kind of bike that I'm looking for. Actually I'm looking for a BeachCruiser type... No gear changes and minimal frills. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
As has been alluded to- Vegas is not a very bike-friendly city. I have been hit by a car once- A guy in a big line of traffic waiting for a stop light decided to gun it out into the shoulder right as I was passing by and side swiped me. I have had a couple other close calls. I'm not gonna tell you not to ride a bike here- I still do when I am in town. If you ride at night- have lights! and definitely wear a helmet.
Getting a bike stolen shouldn't be a big deal for you since you are looking to get a cheap bike. I had a $1000 bike stolen that I had locked up just off the strip with a U-lock. So Spooks- if you are riding your bike outside of your area be very cautious about locking it up (if you aren't already). I now lock mine up with "street cuffs"- they look like handcuffs- apparently U-locks can be busted apart with a car-jack. Anyone who rides their bike to the strip lock your bike in a high-vis area. MGM has a good bike lock-up in the garage near the valet. Downtown- I know that the Horseshoe has bike racks in one of the parking garages- it seems slightly iffy as far as getting a bike ripped off there if you just have a cable/chain lock. As far as buying a bike- pick up a copy of the paper when you get into town- there are usually a couple of bikes for around $100 in the classifieds- usually cheap Mtn bike style. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
Yeah, I don't even have a bike lock, so I don't leave my bike unattended outside. (there is nothing where I live worth biking to)

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
1. Biking in Vegas is surprisingly pleasant. Lots of broad streets with wide shoulders, but bike lanes seem to be near schools. Drivers are very courteous (off the Strip). Never had one make a right turn on red if I was at the corner. Had to wave them through. In fact, they may have been the most bike-friendly drivers I've come across, but I can't explain why since I saw so few bikers.
2. I agree that the Strip is bad news unless you have a death wish or seek adrenalin highs. The Strip does have bicycle cops who are interesting to talk to if you like night time urban cycling. 3. There's a PDF map of bikeable LV streets on the web. Very useful. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll see if I can locate it. 4. Orleans has a bike rack a few feet from the poker room. One of the few reasons to play there. 5. Lots of bike shops have signs saying that they rent bikes, but I have no experience renting. |

I dont' knwo if this was an urban legend or not, but the general belief when I lived in Vegas was the fine for speeding in a school zone was $100 per 1 mph over the limit. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
Thanx again for the input.
I have plenty of commiserations to those who have either been knocked off their bikes or who have had them stolen. I would of thought that there would of been employees of casino who would have preferred this mode of transport when traffic is saturated. I haven't been to Vega$ since Thanksgiving 1996, so I'm sure that the city and the environs has exploded in the time since. The monorail wasn't built then so that might be something to try as well. BTW - I find it ironic that today my rusty, female-style beach cruiser was stolen on the Broadwalk in AC. The lock, a combination style by Bell was not good enough for the desperados at this time of the year. I have a feeling that the people involved with this are those are are pushing the rolling cabs on the Boardwalk, because I saw 2 lofted on the top as they were pushing their passengers while I was cursing under my breathe. Luckily, the bike was not worth much in costs - Unfortunately replacing it, is an infringement on my time and pleasure. |

Re: Bikes in Las Vegas
Just to let those interested...
Arrived in LV on Saturday. Bought a bike that I wanted at the BroadAcres Flea Market on Sunday morning. Travelled on the Cat#113 North Las Vegas Blvd. Felt I was in Mexico - not hAmerika! Bike paid for later in $4-8 game @ Binions. Having a wonderful time riding around Downtown LV. Later I'll head for the strip! Post later |

Dude, seriously you may want to reconsider this one. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I was hoping to bike on the secondary streets if I need to head down south. [/ QUOTE ] That'll be an interesting tour. It may be safer to bike on the strip, at night, wearing black clothing. [/ QUOTE ] |
