Matt,

Very thoughtful and detailed post which finally gave me some insight as to what is going on. That said, I'll miss Paul Phillips and wish all this didn't happen the way it did.

One question (maybe others (Dynasty?) can answer it). When you get a thread you started locked or a post you made deleted, is there some sort of notification (perhaps explaining why if the reason isn't obvious) sent via PM or email? The thread I started on the PP fiasco was locked and I assume it was because it was somewhat redundant or no longer timely.

If such a message is sent via PM I wouldn't get it as I've yet to find time to sort out and delete a sufficient number of my saved messages per the new forum software. [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

Regards,

Rick

I don't think the results of the poll in favor of not banning paul has anything to do with whether we think Paul was justified. I can't speak for anyone else but i think he was rude and out of line. The poll results may be more about whether they think its justified to ban someone beuase he made a moderator, or an owner mad.

I think you try to do a good job with these forums Mat(and do a good job). You don't need to explain yourself. You did what u thought was right at the time. I don't think anyone sees you as a bad or unfair guy. Just my 2 cents as a viewer.

YOUR vote to have Paul back may be for that reason; MY vote to unban him wasn't, as I believe they were 100% in their right to ban him, BUT I wanted him unbanned because I enjoy his posts as I think they add quite a bit to the 2+2 community.

...whether or not his original post was appropriate, I decided that while the deletion of the entire thread was clearly a mistake, the deletion of Paul's post, had I deleted that only, would not have been. Here's why: Dynasty has been busting his ass for us.... It seemed to me that if Paul wanted to be so acerbic in his criticisms, that it would have behooved him to know that the same moderator he was denouncing, was to a large degree acting on his behalf, and not merely "swinging his [censored] around."

To summarize, management felt that management was doing a good job. Shocking!

I'm sure that most of the mods mean well. However, anyone who cannot see that colorful criticism ("swinging his [censored] around") is not the same as engaging in abusive ad hominem attacks ("so-and-so is a dickless retard") should not be moderating a website where the free exchange of ideas is encouraged.

If you read my post again i said i can't speak for anyone else.

And about his posts adding to the 2+2 community is hogwash. Yes he could add good stuff. But chooses to insult and start flamewars instead. Exactly the type dynasty was trying to get rid of. Problem is he's famous so people want to kiss his butt. If me or you did what Paul did we would be history plain and simple. Everyone should be treated fairly.

Btw if we did a poll on whether Pauls action were justified he would lose. So what i said to matt i think is pretty close to correct imo. That the polls results were probably not indicative of whether we felt pauls actions justified. But more for other reasons.

Default What This Reminds Me Of

The badass genius kid in school who gets all the cheerleaders and gets a 1600 on his SAT even though he was hung over decides to show up to a Math Club meeting to try to get all the nerds riled up.

The nerds don't like their haven being stirred around, so they demand lame apologies and call teacher to try to get the badass genius kid to leave.

After he leaves they all sit around nervously recounting their "war stories" about what happened and about how badass genius kid is a huge "poopy faced jerk". Eventually they get bored with that and go back to crunching numbers and trading acne secrets.
---------
I'd about bet the math nerds would have a much more enjoyalbe life if they lightened the hell up a little bit. Sure badass genius kid can be a prick sometimes, but don't let it get to you so much! Censorship is for nerds.

I wish all the talk wasn't about whether or not Paul should have been banned, and whether to allow him back (he will never come back regardless of his status, btw). I hope that this thread stands as a testament to how a lot of people feel about how the forums are moderated (again, not Mat or Dynasty in particular- they generally do a good job from what I have seen). To retiterate my earlier posts- there are different rules from different moderators, and that is wrong. The rules should be the same no matter who is enforcing them.

Mat's 3 issues.

1. "Pro name calling"

I vote for a double standard. I'm not kidding. If some random nobody calls Hellmuth a blah blah, delete and ban, whatever.

BUT, THEE best posts in the RGP archives are the ones where all the pro's are bickering back and forth like they're on the playgrounds...especially the whole Negreanu vs Duke fiascos....pure.comedy.gold.

Guys, lighten up, it's actually hilarious when the pro's do it to themselves vs some random troll.

2. Thread deletion. K, no big deal. You accidently deleted an entire thread...I'm sure 99.9% of us are capable of doing that eventually. (I do find it ironic Paul gets chastized for saying how crappy ubb is then Mat says "well a flaw in the software....)

Mat, quit apologizing for this, it happens...whoever can't accept this just wants something to [censored] about.

3. The "outing of mason's 'pm'".

This is just common sense here. If ANYBODY has been on ANY forum for more then 1 day you should be fully aware of people posting "Private" messages. Mason has all power and sent such a ridiculous demanding pm...you should have fully expected Paul to make that public somewhere.

You give a chimp a gun and the chimp shoots somebody, don't blame the chimp.

The actual banning is trying to be justified by saying "well he called us names" ...again, anybody here new to forums? Sounds to me like you guys just wanted to ban paul just because (hey it happens, we do it all the time at my other forums) but you're trying to ban him on a technicality. Again, there's a huge difference between somebody in here calling Negreanu gay constantly and paul making an anology to nazi's.

I have a question for people participating. Is it acceptable for a private message of yours to be posted on these boards? I mean aside from unsolicited spam, don't most people have an expectation that their private message is something that will remain private?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's basic email policy that you should never write something in an email or private message that you would not like someone else to read later. Just like if you have a problem with a coworker, it's never wise to discuss it over email. The phone works much better because it's easier to discern tone and there's no proof of harrassment if you do something stupid.
