Top set versus ugly river
Of course the 7 of spades would have been worse. Is this a blocking or value bet? Does flat calling the river lose you value? Should I have pushed harder on the flop and turn?

Re: Top set versus ugly river
Raise more on the flop, bet more on the turn, I'd push the river 'cause I'm pretty sure he only has like $6 left.

Even if you have a confident read on your opponent, you should still call because his bet is small relative to the size of the pot. |

The flop raise was perfect. [/ QUOTE ] No it wasn't. It was a very draw heavy board and the small raise gave him very good odds to chase. [ QUOTE ] CALL THE RIVER. Even if you have a confident read on your opponent, you should still call because his bet is small relative to the size of the pot. [/ QUOTE ] Given the small size of the opponent's stack after the bet, I think that you're leaving too much money on the table when you're ahead. |

Re: Top set versus ugly river
Yeah definitely raise the flop to about $7 or $8. Don't let him draw to a cheap flush. Turn bet is okay. If you raised more on the flop, you could have raised to $15 with a good chance of him calling. Same good odds for you, except bigger pot.

The turn bet was not ok. It should have been pot sized. LOL to other comments. LOL i say! |

Re: Top set versus ugly river
The pot is $6. Villain bets $1.50 and your call is $1.50. $8 isn't even a pot sized raise! If there were no draws it would be a different story, but do you see those two black shapes? Those are called spades. If another one comes, OP is [censored].

Re: Top set versus ugly river
Raise more on the flop. Like to $8-10. Bet more on the turn. Big draw boards => you should bet your big hands big. Milk the monkey on less draw-heavy boards. Also, consider flop calls are very loose in those games, so if he's going to autocall the flop with his gutshot or flush draw, you should take advantage. Plus he may go all in with a draw. If the calling argument doesn't sway you, hink about how many cards might kill your action on the turn.
As played, you go all in without any thought at all. Automatic. Anything else is terrible unless you have actually observed him play dozens of hands like that and know he sucks out loud and minbets it when he hits knowing you are thoroughly pot stuck. Even then you have to think about putting him all in. |
