Generally between $50 and $150. 150-200 isn't uncommon, When I get below 60s I start to feel short.

Often I carry all sorts of odd stray bills of various denominations, but sometimes I keep it all very neat. I usually try to keep at least a 20 besides whatever lower bills I have haphazardly collected. Generally I like two or three 20's plus the etc.'s.

That will let me make a small impulse buy or two, or pick up a few groceries without sweating if I have the cash.

[/ QUOTE ]

I couldn't describe my money carrying habits any better than this if I tried.

I've got 100-200 in my money clip usually and yeah there's more on my casino trips. I've been a big, big fan of debit cards for a few years now. "Won't leave home without it."

I never carry money unless there is a poker game. If I want something I will use my debit card.

I used to do this too, but when I started carrying more cash around (usually because I didn't get to a bank after playing pinochle) I realized that cash has a lot of advantages.

It's much easier when eating/drinking with friends and it's time to split the bill (plus you aren't going to get shafted if someone in the group doesn't pay their share). If you shop at any small business you are helping them out by paying cash, since the portion of the sale that they have to pay the credit card company can really add up. At a restaurant with slow service, it sucks to have to wait to get the check, and then wait again for the server to come back with the slip for your sign - its nice to be able to just throw down cash and leave (also true at busy bars where you have to fight your way to the front just to pay your tab). A lot of cabs don't take cards. The guy selling hotdogs on the street (the best food in the world when you are stumbling home drunk) doesn't take plastic. You can't throw you debit card at the stage at a strip club. The list goes on...

so now I like to carry around lots of cash, and I actually hoard my small bills so that I'll have them when its inconvenient to make change or I need to throw them at a stripper (which doesn't happen nearly enough since I live in seattle ).

generally $100-$500. I used to carry more, but now I spend less. I buy everything with cash. Books, groceries, eating out, drinks.

It's also how I budget. Anything in cash is available to be spent immediately, on anything.

Because the less cash you have on hand, the more frequently you have to go to the ATM. I'm with James. I typically get $300 out of the ATM at a time so I have between $100-$300 usually.

It's not a need thing. Cash is faster, and the more I carry the more I won't mind spending it. I have no reason to be frugal, but for most of my life I had no money - so spending 50 bucks or something feels weird if it's all I have in my wallet. If there is more there afterwards, then I won't mind spending nearly as much. I guesss it's a psychological thing, like keeping a bankroll bigger than you need in a poker account.
