buy-in question

long time lurker with a rather random question.. but a few of the books i've read said different things..

When you go to play, say 3-6 or 4-8 limit ring games, how much do you normally buy in with? I've heard anywhere from 100-400 X's the BB amount, but that just seems excessive.

Most of the time I buy in with $100 or $150 and do well enough, rarely the times I get swept in the first couple hands I enter and have to buy another rack..

what do you guys say?

In terms of what to have at the table at any given time, most players here tend to buy in for between 25-50 big bets, so for $4-8 anywhere between $200 and $400.

I've been on a 30 big bet buyin kick lately.

The most important thing is to always have enough money in front of you to fully bet your next hand. 12 BBs is enough if a hand is capped on every street. (Theoretically, since there is no cap on the number of raises players can engage in heads-up, you can put way more than this number of bets in.)

For a few different reasons, you don't ever want to be all-in when playing limit.

100-400 big bets sounds like figures given for a limit hold'em bankroll. The general figure given here is in the 300 big bet range. If you're just playing recreationally (ie you have something called a "job,") don't sweat bankroll stuff. Just play a limit you're comfortable with and track your results.

I find that buying in for 2 racks to be advantageous to 1 rack.
