It's because 30 years ago or however long ago it was, way before all this low carb stuff, the beer companies realized there was no way they were ever going to get their target demographic of 18-35 year old males to drink something called "diet," and "light" beer was created. Somewhere along the line Miller came up with genius idea of "Lite" beer.

what's in regular coke?

sugar

What's sugar?

A carbohydrate

What's not in Diet coke?

Sugar, a carbohydrate.

Lazymeatball hit the nail on the head. It's just not manly to drink things with "diet" in them.

Edit: Holy crap, I just had a great idea. I'm making a product called di3t b33r
