Preferred way to arrange one's chips

Are you the guy that had the big pile of chips that I made recount every single had he played - just to be a jerk - and take him off his game?

It was pretty funny actually - he refused to stack his chips at a NL ring game so no one could get a count on what he had... after being asked to stack them a few times, he limped in to me on the BB. I asked for a chip count. Then checked. I checked, the button minbet and I made him count again... before folding my J3o. Half the table was chuckling when I made him count again from the SB. He finally stacked them up.

I don't know why it bugs me but I have a major pet peave with the (typically new) players that are "10 high stackers". Especially on a rush in a red chip game where they end up with two dozen of these little 10 high chip stacks. Only worse than that are the people who keep chips in a horizontal row (chips on end) against the rail.

When playing 20/40(with $5 chips ala AC) and winning, I end up with the pyramid of 15 stacks of 20 chips each then build an obnoxious tower on top of that. People love watching you make fancy designs with their money.

Get over it. I'm usually one of these, because I'm a klutz and I don't want to knock my stacks of 20 either across the table or into my lap. Also, I've played mostly at the Taj lately, and on some of their tables the felt slopes off under the rail so your stacks at the rail aren't level. Not a good thing if they're also taller than the rail.

All that said, though, I don't do the endless forest of $50 stacks. If there are that many I'll do 20s or start a pyramid. Stability is the key for me.

Almost all tables do this to some extent. If you leave an inch or so between the rail and your stacks it's never a problem. Taj chips shouldn't ever fall over anyway as the mystery black gunk on them keeps them stuck together in a solid mass.

OK, good point on the gunk. But I've had some seats there where it was a couple inches out from the rail to get away from the steep slope.

I always end up having weird stacks of 5-10 chips a stack, so I never know my exact amount, which is not a good thing. (In a limit cash game, that wouldn't be too bad. But in a tourney, that's could cost me.)

Why such the pet peeve? I'm a 10-high stacker, mostly because I'm short and can't see over a 20-high stack.

Ok, I'm exaggerating. But I do tend to catch my arms on the 20-highs and knock them all over the table. So I stick to 10-high.

Just do it the right way and stack them all in stacks of 20. There's a reason casino racks fit 20 chips per row, because they are easiest to keep track of that way. It makes things much easier and far less confusing for all involved, particularly during amateur hour in a no limit game.

Building giant pyramids in stacks of 20. Build out, then up, then out again. Win enough chips so that you can rest your weary head on them while you wait to win more chips so you can add to your monument of poker genius. Or at least that's the plan....
