I am also a non French speaking ugly american. I went to the Aviation Club in June and was turned away at the door for not wearing appropriate shoes. When i asked which shoes were appropriate I was told "classic black".

Feeling alittle dissapointed I wandered the Champs Elysses looking at shoes. What was I thinking? Thats a great place to go shoe shopping if you want to buy an outrageously priced pair. I wanted the cheapest passable pair of shoes. The cheapest pair I found was 60 Euros and I caved in and bought them. So the next day I show up at the Club, whats the problem this time? I am too early. The games don't start until the afternoon.

So I finally get in a game a few hours later and it was worth the hassle. The players were absolutely awful. I ended up sitting in a great pot limit dealers choice with a few games in the mix that I had never heard of. Oh well i learned as I played. Even with that disadvantage I was able to recoup the cost of my shoes and had one 2 Euro chip left over as a souvenier (they don't use 1 Euro chips, ever).

As far as the staff was concerned I was treated very well and enjoyed their classy facilities.

Great stuff.

So what's the etiquette at play? French only at the tables? How much do people tip the dealers? What were some of these different games dealt?

Same etiquette as any other casino. I do not know if it is french only during a hand, unless you are going with a friend I don't see why it would matter. From what I remember people didn't seem to tip as much as they do in America. As for the games there were a bunch of fun ones that you will be dying to bring into your home game.

Double Hold'Em: Two flops, turns and rivers where the winning hand from each board chops the pot.
Courchevel: Esentially Omaha but the first flop card is exposed for the first round of betting
Aviation: I think its the same game as crazy fox? You get 4 cards and discard one on the flop and one on the turn.
7 Stud
7 Stud Hi-Low
Omaha
Omaha Hi-Low
Omaha 5: You get 5 instead of 4 (still only use 2)
Hold'Em

I like to joke and chat at the table. Plus I'm just curious. At the Holland Casino in Amsterdam, they allow German and English at the table in addition to Dutch. Those crazy Dutch polyglots and their openness.

No problem. Ahh that damned Holland Casino in Amsterdam. I played there a few weeks after I played in Paris. The lowest game they spread is 10-20 which is a little over my head but i was jonesing to play so I decided to take a shot. After running quite cold for awhile I picked up dueces on the button. I limped after 2 limpers and the flop came 9 3 2. Well to cut to the chase it came running nines and A9 took it down, breaking me in the process. Needless to say I left with my tail between my legs looking for the closest coffee shop [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img].

You got them almost right.

Courchevel is like 5 card Omaha, but the first card of flop is dealt in initial deal before betting.

Aviation, you discard one card after the first betting round, before the flop is dealt. When the second betting round is completed, you discard second card before the turn. After that its like Holdem.

They also play "Seven Nullo". Its Seven card stud Low-only - no straights or flushes.

I just got back from Paris and played a couple of sessions, one of dealer's choice and one of straight hold 'em, at the Aviation Club. Just a couple of quick notes:

The players there will call away all their chips with ten high flush draws on the turn without batting an eye, then get mad when they don't hit.

There's a dealer that looks exactly like Mila Kunis.

Bring dress shoes! And if you forget, don't try to buy a pair on that street. It's the high rent district. I'd like to know where a pair of 60 euro shoes were to be found there.

The resturant in the club is wonderful and really a bargin.

I'm not sure if they've changed the dealer's choice line up, but there were placards for both Courchevel and Courchevel Hi/Lo. 7 Stud Hi might have been dropped.

Tell me a little more about the low limit hold'em. I'm actually flying over to Amsterdam next week and will have Saturday or Sunday to play some poker in Europe. The ACF looks like a good choice as they have low limit games, but taking their virtual tour reveals all of 6 tables in the poker room. I'm a little concerned I'll be stuck in a dealer's choice or higher limit game than what I'm comfortable with. 2/4 and 4/8 limit hold'em is what I'm interested in primarily. Thanks

There are in fact only a half-dozen tables in the main room. Your chance of finding a low-limit hold'em game at the ACF is virtually zero, unfortunately.
