Default Time to branch out a bit.....

Well, I'm going to put what I learned in college to use. I went to school many moons ago and took stats and accounting mainly and those have helped immensely with poker.

Being that I used to be a BJ dealer and have seen people consistantly beat the game, I have delved into the BJ side of it now.

I have started with the following books:
Blackbelt in Blackjack by Arnold Snyder
Professional BJ by Stanford Wong
Blackjack Essays by Mason Malmuth

I will be adding BJ Secrets by Stanford Wong as it details things such as learning how to play and NOT get kicked out as a result.

Anyone have any suggestions besides these 4 that are MUST reads?

Can't beat blackjack without counting
Counting is difficult to do while looking nonchalant
Counting is severely handicapped by liberal cuts in the shoe
Counters are spotted by their betting range

All in all, I don't see how blackjack can be beaten long term.

If you enjoy blackjack, learn basic strategy, use a simple Ace-5 count, keep your bets in a reasonable spread to avoid suspicion, and you shouldn't lose too much dough.

Well I already know the basics of counting and know basic strategy by heart including variences from 2 deck up to 8 deck. I know where the best 2 deck game in town is though.

3/4 penetration, S17, split 4 times including Aces, double after splits except, no surrender, 3:2 bj with a 5-1000 betting limit. 200-1 spread.

Yes, I understand the cuts in the shoe are very liberal now. It used to be 1 deck for 6 deck shoe. Now some places are going as high as 3 decks which is absolutely ridiculous. They might as well put CSM's in there and save the trouble of shuffling every 25 hands.

Your argument has serious flaws.

It can be beat without counting. One can use shuffle tracking and card sequencing to beat the game. Other methods of gaining an advantage exist as well. Of course, it's not easy.

Counting is difficult to do while looking nonchalant

It's not all that hard at all with a little practice.

[ QUOTE ]

Counting is severely handicapped by liberal cuts in the shoe

Actually, I think "conservative" cuts would be more appropriate, but this is absolutely true.

This is absolutely true.

Tell that to the folks who have done and continue to do so. Of course, it's harder than it was 15 years ago, and given the amazing popularity of poker there are much easier ways to generate black ink in casinos these days, but it's still doable.

I recommend going with either Wong's version of the Hi-Low or Vancura and Fuchs KO system. Keep your bets in a reasonable spread and you should be able to make some money. Poker is much more profitable right now.

This might be my single favorite blackjack book out there.

You must add "Blackjack Attack" by Don Schlessinger to your list. In many ways, Griffin's "Theory of Blackjack" is to Blackjack what "Theory of Poker" is to poker. It should be on your list. Ian Andersen's two books are well worth reading.

Are you referring to the Plaza downtown? Was there about 6 months ago and I found it to be the best game in town, fitting your description to a tee.
