Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
Hi Huey:
I haven't read all the McEvoy/Cloutier books but believe it or not, I consider the one you're criticizing to be their best one. I also agree with your criticisms. Best wishes, Mason |

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
Howard Lederer DVDs are about the worst I have seen/read....I have gone through close 15 books...and decided to check out his DVDs....it was the biggest crap I have seen....his first and second....his 1st dvd can be summed up in a page of rules of the game...his 2nd dvd is very basic also....then he throws in some tells which are like 1/100 of caro's books on tells....I learned more by reading cardplayer magazine and this forum then i did watching his 2 dvds...
about the best books to read on Holdem: Skalansky on limit Dan Harrington on NL tournament play both his I and II Brunson on NL sidegames and NL tournys... waiting patiently till Daniel Negreanu or Phil Ivey publish books of their own....they have very different approaches than the old school players and are very refreshing to watch and daniel negreanu to read in his columns... |

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
TJ Cloutier's book on Omaha is the same style as Huey mentioned in his criticism of TJ's "Pot Limit & NL HE" --bunch of light fluff with stories from the Texas days. What's even MORE annoying is that he'll tell Holdem hand tales in a book that's supposed to be for Omaha Poker. You'd think someone would realize Omaha is a complex game and put the pages to good use, but alas, no. Fill out the Omaha book with starting hands/stories--doesn't leave you with that much meat. I really appreciate Dan Harrington in his HoH, especially the 2nd volume, going into detail and mentioning advanced strategies. I can read and re-read these books and about all the 2+2 texts. The other books aren't bad to read, say you're at a bookstore, get a coffee and read thru Hellmuth's book or TJ's book and you can get the basics if you're wanting to learn a new poker game. |

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
Ive read about almost every book out there. Anything with the names McEvoy or Cloutier on it is a crap book. They just talk general stuff throughout and try to make the words big so it looks like a lot of pages.

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
that was my first poker book I read, got it at the library like 4 years ago. The best part of that book is how much he puts down the reader throughout the book, calling the reader a patsy sucker sissy ect.. Most people will have no clue what I am talking about, but for those of you who read this book for whatever reason you should have picked up his anger and harsh words.

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
My general rule is to avoid anything by Cardoza Publishing, there a couple exceptions but if you buy a random Cardoza book, from my observation, you are buying a dud 95% of the time.
edit: After going to the Cardoza site I found I was wrong. I liked SS2, SS1(outdated and kind of useless now but topical and good at original publication date), Caro's book on tells, and Roy West's stud book is ok and Kammen's book on stud was tolerable. So I revise my 95% figure to about 75% duds. Ken Warren's stuff is abysmal. A great Christmas gift for poker beginners you hate : ) ideal for the overconfident and arrogant poker beginner. TJ Cloutier books are entertaining just not a lot of poker stuff, read them all from the library but wouldn't buy them. Didn't learn much but didn't need a core wipe like after reading Warren. |

Hi Everyone:
I'm curious, but has anyone ever passed an opinion similar to this back to Cardoza and gotten a reply? Best wishes, Mason |

Re: Does anyone have a list of the worst poker book?
I can't believe nobody mentioned the crap known as "Texas Hold'em Secrets" by Roy Rounder or whatever name he's calling himself this week. This guy sells his ebook for $50 only to reveal the art of being a quasi-Move in specialist, a style which is taught by material a third of the ebook's price and can only beat the game's most hopeless players. When you read his "Limit or No-Limit" section where his mainly denounces limit poker, you automatically know what type of player Roy Rounder is (if the fact that ebook was overpriced five thousand times over didn't tip you off). I value Bill Fillmaff's webisodes WAY more than Roy Rounder's ebook.
If you ever had the urge to read about the strategies taught in "Texas Hold'em Secrets", get a free copy like I did and save your fifty dollars to play a sit-n'-go in Atlantic City or buy two or three GOOD poker books. |
