Just looked up the Searchers on IMDB, and found this in trivia. I need to watch this again.

"According to John Wayne in a 1974 interview, John Ford hinted throughout the movie that Ethan had had an affair with his brother's wife, and was possibly the father of Lucy and Debbie. This meant Ethan's thirst for vengeance stemmed not from the murder of his brother, but of the woman Ethan had loved. This was so subtle that many viewers at the time missed it altogether."

Once upon a Time in the West is my favourite film of all time. Leone wanted Eastwood to be one of the 3 outlaws at the beginning (which is possibly the most stunning opening sequence ever). So many good ideas went into this film - For Example - just love the way each of the main Characters were given their own theme tune which played each time they were in a Scene.

Personally, I don't think this Film has got anywhere near as much acclaim as it should have (it was lambasted by Film Critics when first released) although it does seem that in the past few years it is beginning to get the plaudits it deserves.

Leone wanted the 3 baddies at the beginning for OUATITW to be the Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef.

That would have been awesome!

Yes, Wallach and Van Cleef agreed, Eastwood said no, though I don't know if it was for aesthetic reasons or logistical ones.

Winchester 73.

I know it's not got a snowball's chance in hell, but there has to be a James Stewart one in there somewhere.

You probably just hate bad westerns, there are some truly great ones. The two you mention are both masterpieces.
