Re: Cassandra Syndrome
[ QUOTE ]
Since online poker is operated outside the US, the US government has precisely zero jurisdiction. [/ QUOTE ] You're wrong. Online gambling can be construed as wire fraud [violation is probably a better word]. I've got at least one article that may enlighten you. Is Online Gambling Legal? [ QUOTE ] The anaolgy to Napster is way off. Napster was theft, pure and simple. [/ QUOTE ] So is not claiming money you made on your IRS returns. There may very well be groups who feel that online gambling is reducing their profits from live casinos. It might be cutting into someone's kickbacks. You just never know who is getting their toes stepped on, or who feels like they are getting theirs stepped on. I also never said liberal democrats wouldn't jump on the bandwagon either. But I feel it will be the right wing religious types who invent this as a politcal issue, and the then the Dems will likely go belly up and say "oh sure we knew it was wrong all the time, vote for us!". |

I've read that article and all the others. Online gaming has already been deemed to *not* be in violation of the wire act. That's why Congress has begun trying to restrict US banks' transfers. This is also a fairly non-issue since most US credit cards already can't be used for deposits (though some debit cards still can). As to "enlightenment", gambling is regulated by the states. Right now, most state's gambling laws are vague about internet gambling (Nevada is one that expressly prohibits it), and most gambling laws do not punish the players, just the organizers. I also never said liberal democrats wouldn't jump on the bandwagon either. But I feel it will be the right wing religious types who invent this as a politcal issue, and the then the Dems will likely go belly up and say "oh sure we knew it was wrong all the time, vote for us!". In 2003, 56% of House Democrats sided with the GOP majority on h.r. 2143. 17 Republicans voted against it. The bill was referred to the Senate where the Senate version cleared committee but never made it to the floor. This is a "feel good" issue that congressmen use to get votes. In reality, if passed, it would have almost zero impact on our ability to play poker online. |

Is Online Gambling Legal? [/ QUOTE ] Is this site legit?! It sounds like I'll be seeing you all in prison. Even someone that only played a few freerolls and never won anything would have a link on the chain gang, according to the article. The headline maybe should be "How long before the U.S. is a fascist police state." |

Re: Cassandra Syndrome
I think the big battle will be between "our" American mafia and "their" Costa Rican-Bahamanian-Gibraltar mafia. Nevada mobsters did everything they could to stop the spread of lotteries and gambling to other states. "Our" hometown crooks are the "big money" that will back any bills that cripple online gambling. Money has always been a more powerful political force than morality.
