It's not really a middle, it's an arbitrage, but sometimes those terms are used interchangeably.

I stand corrected. In sports-betting lingo this is an arb and not a middle. (It is also sometimes referred to as a "scalp").

A middle would involve a wager where you had some possibility of a win-win or at least a win-tie such as betting the favorite and laying 3 points while betting the underdog and getting 5 points.

If the game lands on 4 you have a middle and win both bets; if it lands on 3 or 5 you have a "side" and win one bet while pushing the other.
