The best way I've seen to explain Nietzhe's "god is dead" quote without extensive study of his philosophy is this: Christianity has killed belief in god by postulating an unbelievable god.

edit: PS And a good simplification of Kierkegaard is to say that Christianity has enabled faith in god by postulating an unbelievable god.
